Graning Flair! New & Old

Graning Paint Shop has moved from its old location on Broadway to a new spot just off Hall of Fame and Magnolia Ave. Their original location featured a great rainbow & paint bucket mural that adorned their entire back wall and were sorry to see it go as the building (and the neighboring buildings) gets razed to make way for a new bridge over the train tracks.

But they've moved into a bigger space and improved upon the old paint bucket theme on a larger, more visible wall. We here at Knox Flair wish them the best with their new store and we know will be dropping in on them soon and regularly.

Behold: the artist's pallet!

New Flair for an Old City!

Just spied: The paint's not even dry yet on this, Knoxville's newest landmark!

Ell Sheckles of Powell, TN is the artist (in blue) and he's been painting signs since the 1940's he told our correspondent.

This lettering job today took the better part of the afternoon, he said. The black had already been laid down before they started today and the rest took about 4 hours with 30 minutes before and after for setup and breakdown. A platform between the two 40 foot ladders was used connected to the rigging seen hanging.

Here's we see the tools of the trade inside his mobile office. The yellow detergent jug smelled like it was full of mineral spirits. He sloshed it onto a rag to wipe down his hands as he gamely answered questions about his craft before taking off after a good day's work. Fresh Flair!
